Professional Story

I have been working in the field of holistic nutrition and integrated health care for 30 years and am a leading expert in nutrition and digestion. The author of Digestive Wellness, Digestive Wellness for Children and Leaky Gut Syndrome, I am in private practice in Asheville, NC and consult by phone with clients and physicians worldwide.

A frequent contributor in the media, I have hosted the talk show “Health Matters,” on KKCR radio and am a regular guest on radio shows nationwide. In addition to appearances on Fox-TV, ABC-TV, and WGN-TV Chicago, many national newspapers and magazines such as Newsweek, Women’s World, Men’s Health, Alternative Medicine, Let’s Live, First for Women, Today’s Health and Wellness, and Yoga Journal seek out my expertise.

I have worked with virtually every type of health professional in a wide variety of settings.

Why Access to Health Experts

Access to Health Experts was born out of my two greatest desires, to heal through teaching, and to use my large network of professional connections to create a community of integrative health and nutrition expertise. I love bringing people together to connect and learn. The more practical knowledge we have about the human body, the more empowered we become. When we use self-care in our own lives and for our families; we can try things at home before seeking professional advice. Because there is a wealth of both scientific information and clinical experience to draw from, we don’t have guess at what will work.

As health conscious people, many of you have your own stories to share, and that is as important to me as the science. I see this as an opportunity to learn, grow and share for all of us. It is a forum for our collective knowledge.

Health Story

Like many of you, I’ve had my own health “opportunities”. I thought I was in excellent health. As I was turning 49 my blood pressure started elevating and six months later blood tests showed something was wrong with my kidneys. I went to a nephrologist and discovered that I had Polycystic Kidney Disease (PKD). It is an incurable and progressive genetic disease that killed my father. I had already been tested for it in my 20’s and cleared so this was really a shock.

I wholeheartedly believed I would be able to cure myself, or at worst hold my kidney function at 33%. I did everything I knew and everything my colleagues knew, and still we could not stop the progression of the disease.
As my kidneys continued to fail I became chronically anemic. I scaled back on my life, wrote a new book and created some of the teleseminars on this site without knowing at the time this is where they belonged.

It was a frightening time but I had to embrace the option of needing a transplant. To calm myself I’d journal or meditate and the inner guidance I received was amazing. I saw that this was an opportunity to receive love, accept my journey, and put my abilities to the ultimate test. You can’t fight your destiny, but you can embrace it, become knowledgeable, and prepare.

In the spring of 2005 my kidney function dropped below 20% and I chose to have a transplant. My sister donated one of her kidneys, and receiving her love literally saved my life. (That’s her standing next to me in the banner above). I am someone who believes in using the best traditional and non-traditional methods to create integrative healing that gets results.

Personal Story

I have two sons, Kyle and Arthur who are both at the University of Oregon in Eugene. I am recently married to Chris Dennen, who is my partner in life and business. Through my marriage I inherited two more young adults, Aron and Cora who are in college in Asheville. My health is fully restored, which is deeply gratifying because with four kids, three websites, and a thriving practice, I need all the energy I can get.
